If you’re working on your California CCW, you’ll need live-fire qualification as part of your training. This guide explains why qualification is required, how it works, what to bring, and how to make range day smooth and stress-free—especially if you’re in Fresno, Madera, Merced, Kings, or Tulare counties.
Yes. California law requires live-fire qualification exercises as part of concealed carry training. It isn’t just a box to check—range time is where you apply the safety rules and handling skills you learned in the classroom.
Applies to both initial and renewal permits.
Your issuing agency sets the course of fire and scoring standards.
You must qualify with each firearm you choose to list on your permit. Requirements vary by county (for example, Fresno County policies around listed firearms and qualification differ from neighboring counties).
California follows this rhythm:
Initial CCW: Typically a 16-hour class covering safety, legal considerations, responsible carry, and live-fire qualification.
Renewal CCW: Typically an 8-hour class with a law and safety refresher plus live-fire qualification.
(Exact hours and standards are set by your issuing agency.)
Here’s the typical flow for 559CCW range sessions:
Safety briefing – Range rules, safe directions, and how the line is run.
Gear check – Eye/ear protection, approved ammo, and the firearms you’re qualifying with.
Dry practice – Grip, stance, sight picture, and trigger press (no ammo yet).
Live-fire strings – Controlled rounds at set distances and time limits (varies by county).
Scoring & feedback – You’ll see results and get clear coaching on fixes.
Qualify with each firearm – If you’re listing more than one gun, you’ll run the course for each.
Bring the right gear so you can focus on qualification:
Firearm(s) you’re listing on your permit
Factory ammunition (as recommended by your instructor and range-legal)
Two magazines (more is better) or speedloaders
Eye/ear protection (loaners may be limited)
Close-toed shoes, hat with a brim, and weather-appropriate clothing
Government ID and any range fees noted in your confirmation email
(All 559CCW qualifications are conducted indoors; no need to plan for sun exposure.)
Follow commands immediately to keep the line safe and organized.
Maintain muzzle discipline and trigger control at all times.
No handling firearms during breaks unless instructed.
Ask questions—if something feels off, pause and raise your hand.
Be a good neighbor—help keep the bay clean; we all share the space.
Crushing the grip → Ease the support hand slightly; keep consistent, even pressure.
Jerking the trigger → Smooth press straight to the rear; don’t rush the last millimeter.
Snapping shots too quickly → Build a steady cadence first; speed comes after consistency.
Losing sight picture → Focus the front sight, reset cleanly, let the gun return naturally.
Inconsistent stance → Set your feet the same way every string; small routines create stable hits.
(Note: Drawing from a holster is not part of our program.)
County policies differ. In general, you’ll qualify with each firearm you choose to list on your permit, and the number of firearms and specific requirements vary by county (for example, Fresno County’s listing and qualification policies are not identical to other Central Valley counties). Plan accordingly:
Decide on primary and (if desired) backup before range day.
Bring ammo and magazines for each firearm you plan to qualify with.
Expect a separate scoring run for every firearm you’re qualifying with.
Do I have to qualify with the exact gun I’ll carry?
Yes. You must qualify with each firearm you want listed on your permit.
How long does range day take?
Plan for about 1–2 hours for renewals; initial sessions can run longer depending on class size and how many firearms you’re qualifying with.
What if I don’t pass on the first try?
It happens. You’ll receive coaching and may re-shoot based on your issuing agency’s rules.
Can I use reloads?
Most ranges require factory ammo only. We’ll confirm in your reminder email.
The classroom portion can be done 100% online (self-paced, auto-saves progress, works on phone/tablet/laptop) in Fresno, Madera, Merced, and Kings Counties. When you’re ready, you’ll complete the required live-fire qualification with our instructor. Prefer a traditional format? In-person training is available in Fresno, Madera, Merced, Kings, and Tulare.
Live-fire qualification is where your safe habits and judgment show up on the line. We keep it straightforward, structured, and focused on responsible carry.
