Find Your 559CCW Training Option

California CCW permits are available to everyday people

You do not need a career in law enforcement or a military background to pursue a CCW. California’s licensing process is available to eligible applicants who meet the requirements. For resident applicants, those include being at least 21, meeting the applicable residence or qualifying employment requirements, completing accepted training, and passing the agency’s eligibility review. Read Penal Code section 26150.

Shall-issue gives you a meaningful path forward. It does not mean automatic approval, but it does mean you can approach the process with clear requirements instead of assuming a permit is out of reach.

You can start learning before you feel experienced

Training is where you ask questions, develop safe habits, and learn what responsible carry involves. You should feel comfortable telling your instructor, “I’m new to this,” or “I want to work on the basics.” Those are useful conversations.

At 559CCW, we encourage you to understand the reasons behind safe handling and responsible decisions. If you need foundational instruction before qualification, discuss that with us. The goal is to build skills you can use consistently.

Good training also supports people who choose to keep a firearm at home or enjoy recreational shooting. Learning safe handling, secure storage, and sound judgment has value whether or not you decide to carry every day.

How to get a California CCW: a clear plan

1. Start your training with 559CCW

If you live in one of the counties listed on our website, your first step with us is to enroll in the 559CCW course offered for your county. Choose online classroom learning or an available in-person option, and begin building the knowledge and safe habits that support responsible carry.

You do not have to sort through the process alone. We will explain what comes next and walk you through the application steps for your county. If you are unsure which of our courses fits your location, ask us and we will point you to the right option.

2. Complete your lessons and live-fire qualification

Work through your lessons, ask questions, and complete the required assessments. California generally requires at least 16 hours of initial CCW training, including a written examination and live-fire qualification. Training covers safety, handling, storage, transportation, carry laws, lawful self-defense, and mental health education. Read the training requirements.

For 559CCW online students, look for your Next Steps email after completing the online portion and use it to sign up for an available range date. Your in-person qualification demonstrates safe handling and shooting proficiency with each firearm you want listed on your license. Our live-fire qualification guide explains what to expect.

3. Let us guide you through your application

We will walk you through the application process, help you understand the documents you need, and explain the next steps for fingerprints, your interview, and submitting your training records. Your county’s process sets the sequence; we help you follow it.

Our support goes beyond the classroom. When a question comes up, you have someone to ask instead of having to figure out every step yourself.

4. Follow through to receiving your permit

We will continue guiding you through the remaining steps toward receiving your permit. Your sheriff or police department makes the licensing decision and issues the license after the requirements are satisfied.

Once your permit is issued, put your training into practice responsibly. Understand your license, maintain safe habits, and keep developing your skills. Your certificate is the training milestone; your issued permit is the next one.

Build skills that last beyond your certificate

Responsible carry is about preparation and judgment. Training gives you a foundation for safe decisions, awareness, and understanding when to avoid or leave a situation. Continued practice helps you maintain what you learned.

You do not have to learn everything in one day. Start with instruction, ask for feedback, and build a steady habit of reviewing safety and practicing appropriately. Treat proficiency as something you continue developing.

Frequently asked questions

Is California a shall-issue state?

Yes. California uses a shall-issue licensing framework. The issuing agency must issue a license when an applicant satisfies the applicable legal requirements. A permit is still required to carry concealed, and approval follows the application and eligibility review.

Do I need a special reason to get a California CCW?

No special “good cause” showing is required. You still need to meet the applicable eligibility, application, background-check, and training requirements.

Do I need to be an experienced shooter before taking a CCW class?

You do not need to be an expert to begin learning. Tell your instructor about your experience so you can identify an appropriate starting point. Completing CCW training includes demonstrating safe handling and shooting proficiency.

Can I complete California CCW training online?

Yes. If you live in one of the counties listed on our website, start with the 559CCW course offered for your county. Complete the classroom portion online, then complete in-person live-fire qualification. We will guide you through the application process and the steps toward receiving your permit.

How much does initial training cost at 559CCW?

559CCW’s initial course prices are $125 for online classroom training, $165 for hybrid training, and $195 for fully in-person training.

Does completing training give me permission to carry concealed?

No. Training is one part of the process. Your sheriff or police department must issue your CCW license before you carry under that license.
