Fresno County Sheriff’s Department Permit Requirements
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office administers all CCW permits in the county. While completing our online training satisfies the education requirement, you still need to meet and submit to the Sheriff’s processes. Here’s what you need to know:

- Application & Fees: As of November 19 2025, new CCW applications cost $297 and renewals $136. Modifications—such as adding a firearm or changing your address—remain $10.
- Training Hours: For a new standard permit you must complete 16 hours of training. For renewals, the requirement is 8 hours.
- Firearm Listing: You may list up to 6 handguns on your permit. Each listed firearm must be registered to you, and you must qualify with each.
- Process Steps:
Own a hand-concealable firearm
Submit your application and pay the initial fee
Pass background check and interview (including LiveScan fingerprinting)
Complete your online course, then schedule and pass your live-fire qualification
Once approved, pay the final fee and receive your permit.
- Dishonesty on Application: Falsifying information on the application or being dishonest during the interview process is an immediate cause for denial.
- Pattern of Irresponsibility: A history of a suspended driver’s license, numerous traffic citations, or civil lawsuits may indicate a pattern of irresponsibility and lead to a denial.
- Recent Criminal History: Any arrest in the last 5 years or any conviction in the last 7 years may be grounds for denial, regardless of final disposition.
- Behavioral Issues: A history of domestic disturbances or other concerning behavioral issues, even if not leading to a criminal conviction, can be considered.
- Failure to Meet Administrative Requirements: This includes failing the live-fire range qualification, not completing the 16-hour required training from an approved instructor, or not providing correct documentation in a timely fashion.
- Firearm Ownership Issues: Attempting to list a firearm on the permit that is not registered solely in the applicant’s name or is otherwise unlawful to possess in California.
- Residency: Not having your primary residence in Fresno County.
