Have you thought about getting your concealed carry permit but feel nervous because you’ve never handled a firearm before? You’re not alone! Learning about firearms to earn your concealed carry permit is important, even if you’re brand new.
When you start training for your concealed carry permit, you’ll enter a safe and welcoming environment. Good firearm instructors understand that people can feel nervous around firearms. That’s why they use special training tools called “yellow guns.” These are plastic firearms that can’t shoot. Even though they’re safe, you handle them as if they’re real and loaded.
During training, you’ll learn four simple and very important safety rules:
If you’re attending firearms training for your concealed carry permit, you usually don’t need to bring anything special. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Bringing a bottle of water is also helpful. Some classes might even offer snacks or drinks like pizza and soda!
One of the best parts of firearms training is asking questions. If your instructor doesn’t know the answer right away, they’ll help you find the correct information. Learning about firearms means getting answers to all your questions, so ask freely!
Many people worry they must have their own firearm for concealed carry training. Good news—you don’t! Everything you need is provided for the initial classroom training.
However, if you don’t own a firearm, additional range training will be required to become proficient before doing the CCW qualification, which will require owning and training with your own firearm.
Learning about firearms for your concealed carry permit helps you become confident, safe, and responsible. With the right instructor, you can learn at your own pace, ask questions, and leave feeling prepared and knowledgeable.
